#912 Misc. - D-Link - SNMP, telnet exploit virus

Our abuse team have received an increased number of reports regarding telnet (port 23) attacks. The majority of these attacks have been identified as originating from a D-Link hardware vulnerability.

This particular virus initially infects a local machine. From there it will access the router via telnet (obtaining the password via SNMP if not the default). Once access has been gained the malicious code can be planted in the router to scan other vulnerabilities on port 23 across the Internet.

Customers using D-Link hardware are advised to secure their default telnet and SNMP community passwords. Further information on how this can be achieved can be found by clicking the link below:

#594 Broadband (xDSL) - Home 250 - Performance Problems

BT have issued a briefing to Service Providers acknowledging this service issue and they continue to work towards a resolution.

We are also receiving reports from customers of other broadband services experiencing similar symptoms to this fault. To verify whether the issue is likely to be related to this customers experiencing slow speeds should test with MTU values of 1458 or 1430. If these changes resolve the issue then the service is NOT affected by this potentially related fault.

If the slow speeds continue after these changes modify the MTU to 1100 and/or 700 and test again. If the speed problems ARE resolved by either or both of these changes please report the fault to Support for further advice. If the speed problems are NOT resolved you are likely affected by contention or other line-specific issues within the normal product specification.

Instructions for modifying your MTU can be found here:

Speed Tests should be performed as advised here:
